Where the work goes

Merrimac sits inland on the central Gold Coast, between Robina and Carrara, just off the M1. That is a useful place to be based, because a lot of the coast is reachable without a long run.

  • Based Merrimac

    Inland on the central Gold Coast, between Robina and Carrara, just off the M1. Most jobs sit within a short drive.

  • North to Yatala

    The furthest north the work has gone, in his words. That is most of the way to Beenleigh, so the northern end of the coast is well inside range.

  • In between The whole Gold Coast

    There is no suburb list on this page, because Tom does not work off one. Anywhere on the coast is worth ringing about.

  • South to The Queensland border

    The map stops at the state line. A Queensland contractor licence does not by itself cover work in New South Wales, so nothing is claimed south of it here.

What the age of your street tells you

Being twenty minutes away is worth something. Knowing the housing stock is worth more, because the era a street went up in tells you a fair bit about what is behind the switchboard before anyone opens it.

Before mid 1992

No requirement for safety switches on power points

RCD protection on all general purpose socket-outlets arrived with the 1991 wiring standard. A home built before that was never required to have it, and plenty of them still do not. That is not a scare and it does not make a house unsafe, but it does mean nobody can tell you the place is protected without looking. What Queensland requires now.

Mid 1992 onward

Safety switches on the power point circuits

Merrimac and the estates around it were largely built from the late 1980s onward, so the local housing stock sits right across this line. Two houses three streets apart can be on opposite sides of it.

2017 onward

Interconnected smoke alarms in anything new

New builds and substantial renovations have had to meet the interconnected photoelectric standard since 1 January 2017. If your place is newer than that, the alarms are one thing you probably do not have to think about before 2027.

Why local matters for this trade

It is not a marketing line, it changes what you get. A sparky based twenty minutes away can fit you in around the jobs already booked that day. One coming from the far end of the coast cannot, and you feel that in the wait.

It also means the person who picks up the phone is the person who will be standing in your hallway. There is nobody in the middle to lose the detail of what you said.
